01 / TWO TECHNICAL TOPICS
Efficiency-focused engine controls reduce pump power and regulate coolant temperature. With a critical calibration, this can reduce margins for lubrication and thermal load. Oil pressure and temperature corrections address these areas.
Lower oil pump output reduces energy demand and supports fuel consumption and emissions targets. The concern described within the tuning and workshop sector involves pressure targets set too low, particularly at lower engine speeds.
If oil supply is insufficient under actual operating conditions, inadequate lubrication can increase wear in bearings, camshafts and turbochargers and lead to engine damage. A suitable oil pressure correction adjusts the software pressure targets.
High coolant temperature targets support efficiency-focused engine control. Under greater demand, additional heat can affect performance margins and accelerate ageing of plastic and rubber cooling system components.
A temperature adjustment changes the relevant setpoints with the aim of reducing thermal load. Calibration must suit the engine, cooling system and use case.
IN EVERYDAY USE / TRAFFIC · CITY · STOP-AND-GO
In the variable-displacement vane oil pump illustrated here, a pivoting adjustment ring changes the size of the delivery chambers. The N428 oil pressure control solenoid regulates oil pressure acting on a hydraulic control surface, producing a low and a high delivery stage.
At low engine speed and light load, the engine ECU energises N428 in this control principle. The valve opens the oil passage to control surface 2. Oil pressure acting on the control surfaces creates a force opposing the control spring and holds the adjustment ring in a low-eccentricity position.
The spaces between the rotor, vanes and adjustment ring remain smaller. The pump delivers less oil per revolution, reducing its power demand while the lower pressure stage remains active. N428 does not directly throttle oil supply to the engine; it influences pump displacement.
In the illustrated example, N428 is de-energised from 2,500 rpm or at about 300 Nm of engine torque. The normally closed solenoid shuts the passage to control surface 2, relieving it. Oil pressure now acts only on control surface 1, producing less force against the control spring.
The control spring pivots the adjustment ring clockwise around its support, increasing eccentricity relative to the rotor. The vane chambers become larger and deliver more oil. As greater flow encounters resistance in the oil passages and bearings, oil pressure rises.
The valve changes the position of a ring inside the pump. Small pump chambers move less oil; larger ones move more. More load or higher engine speed can switch on the higher stage.
Stop-and-go driving alternates between idling, slow movement and gentle acceleration. Until either the engine-speed or load switching condition is met, N428 can maintain the low delivery stage for an extended period. Even a warm engine therefore does not automatically use the higher pressure stage.
Warm or diluted oil has lower viscosity. Oil temperature, increased bearing clearances, pump wear and control faults can further reduce lubrication margins. During acceleration, bearing loads increase while the engine may still operate at low speed.
If actual lubrication demand increases before the programmed switch, the extra delivery volume becomes available only when the high stage activates. This operating phase warrants assessment when pressure targets are unusually low. A suitable calibration can request the high stage earlier or adjust relevant targets, where the actual software supports it.
The functional principle alone does not establish a sufficient minimum pressure for every engine. Oil temperature, load, viscosity and engine condition must be assessed. The illustrated 2,500 rpm and 300 Nm come from an example control strategy at 100 °C oil temperature; valve design, maps and switching conditions can differ.

Vehicle assignments are based on the recorded ECU type. The oil pressure list also includes VAG applications with EDC17CP54, MD1 and MG1 ECUs. Availability for the actual software version is confirmed using the original file.
599 vehicle variants in the oil pressure list · 507 in the engine temperature list. 24 variants cover both topics; the counts therefore cannot simply be added.
If a vehicle entry contains multiple ECU types, the topic assignment refers to the indicated ECU. Missing or unassigned ECUs are not inferred from model names.
03 / GO STRAIGHT TO YOUR BRAND
The vehicle list includes specific engine variants and factory power outputs. Select a brand to see its matching database entries.
04 / PREVENTION BEFORE DAMAGE
Our recommendation: have the oil pressure and temperature strategy checked early for listed applications. A suitable software correction may be worthwhile before wear symptoms or warning messages appear.
The oil pressure list covers Audi, Volkswagen, SEAT, Škoda, Bentley, Porsche and Lamborghini. MG1CS008 is recorded for Lamborghini; Porsche includes several MG1 and SDI types. VAG diesel applications include EDC17CP54, MD1CP004 and MD1CP014.
First assess the engine, oil supply and cooling system. Then identify the ECU, hardware and original software. Select the suitable adjustment and check the result on the vehicle. Calibration does not repair a worn oil pump or mechanical engine damage.
05 / FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
It shows which brand / ECU combinations are listed for oil pressure or temperature adjustment. An ECU type is used across different vehicles and engine variants. The actual software and diagnosis determine whether adjustment is suitable and available for your vehicle.
The ECU type is the first indication. Whether a particular file can be modified also depends on hardware, software version, read-out method and file contents. We therefore inspect the original file and the complete vehicle assignment.
High target temperatures can be part of the programmed operating strategy. A temperature correction aims to reduce thermal load. Actual overheating, coolant loss or faults in the water pump, thermostat and fan must still be diagnosed and repaired.
No. We do not specify blanket target values or universal promises. An adjustment must suit the engine, hardware, use case and existing software version. Mechanical faults must be repaired first.
VEHICLE CHECK / INTELLITUNING
We assess which adjustment suits your vehicle and your concern, based on proper diagnosis and the actual ECU data.
For inspection, we need the vehicle model, engine variant, ECU type, hardware / software version and, if available, the original file.
